CUPPING THERAPY

WHAT IS CUPPING THERAPY?

Cupping Therapy is an ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine in which a cup is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced (either by heat or suction) in order to draw and hold skin and superficial muscles inside the cup. Sometimes, while the suction is active, the cup is moved, causing the skin and muscle to be pulled.

Cupping therapy is applied to certain acupuncture points as well as to parts of the body that have been affected by pain, where the pain is deeper than the tissues to be pulled. Cupping therapy removes any stagnation in the body and opens the meridians so that your energy (Qi) can flow freely.

It also helps to rejuvenate certain meridians and organs that are not functioning at their best. From a scientific standpoint, cupping is known to help activate the lymphatic system, promote blood circulation, and is good for deep tissue repair.

BENEFITS OF CUPPING THERAPY

Many patients report that cupping helps releasing rigid soft tissues, alleviate migraines, anxiety, fatigue, and more; while the bruises that sometimes follow cupping may appear painful, the treatment is actually quite enjoyable and relaxing for most recipients. Like other massage modalities, cupping soothes the nervous system, creating a parasympathetic “rest and digest” response, dropping blood pressure and inducing deep relaxation.

The other benefits of Cupping Therapy are:

  • Lifting connective tissue.
  • Deep tissue relief.
  • Cleans the blood and lymph.
  • Benefit Arthritis, joint pain, muscle pain and stiffness.
  • Relief from short and long term inflammation.

MANUAL THERAPY ACTIVE RELEASE (A.R.T.)

WHAT IS A.R.T.?

Active Release is a soft tissue system/movement based manual therapy technique (hands-on) that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles.

HOW DO OVERUSE CONDITIONS OCCUR?

Overused muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:

  • acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
  • accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
  • not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)

Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendinitis, and nerves can become trapped. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is trapped you may also feel tingling, numbness, and weakness.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT LIKE?

Every session is actually a combination of examination and treatment. Practitioner uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements.

Clients treated with ART typically respond positively with decreased pain and increased function, flexibility, and mobility.
